The Total Humidity Controller THC-1 humidistat unit is a dial selected humidifier/dehumidifier switch, used to activate a (de)humidifier plugged into it. I use mine with a Venta LW44 Airwasher humidifier to keep my cello humidified. While the switch works well, and the humidity level seems to correspond with the dialed value, it often takes a long time to come on, and the sensor makes a crackling, hissing noise while it is deciding if it needs to come on or not (the transition between off and on). This causes nearby electrical/radio interference while it is doing this. It is also quite expensive to be having such issues. I'm wondering if this is a bad unit or if all these units have this issue. A quick rap on the knob will cause it to come on, but remote controlled lights/ceiling fans and televisions will have interference issues while it is near its target humidity to turn on, and the crackling noise is annoying.

I used to buy more expensive humidifiers that required replacement filters that cost essentially as much as this humidifier.This one puts out a warm mist with no white dust. I rinse the water dish with vinegar once a week, wipe it down and it's clean. I have a two-story house with a furnace humidifier, but I still run two of these humidifiers on low 24/7 in winter. We never have sore throats or colds. The money we save on cough drops and cold meds and doctor visits more than pays for these humidifiers.

I received the Amcor AHD-65E July 16 and, having already read the manual online, immediately removed the unit from its packaging and plugged it in to try it out.The dehumidifier beeped and the "BUCKET FULL" light flashed and then remained lit.Per the owner's manual I removed and reinserted the bucket (repeatedly, and with various time intervals between steps), but the light stayed on and the machine would not work.

I emailed Amcor that night but, despite their efforts "to respond to all e-mail inquiries within 48 hours of receipt," I have received no reply now seven days later.July 19 I called Amcor technical assistance and, after a reasonable wait, I spoke with Keith.Keith was polite and tried to help, but I had already followed the instructions he gave me to get the dehumidifier running.He suggested that I could return the newly purchased machine, but I opted to have someone from the corporate office contact me.I supplied my phone number and email address.Keith said I could expect that reply within three business days.

That time has elapsed, but Amcor has failed to contact me via email or telephone.I have returned the unit for a refund.

I needed the temperature in my baby's room to stay the same even though we're in a small apartment. This really did the trick. It looks great is very compact compared to other ugly large heater humidifiers AND it is both a heater and humidifier so even when it warms up in there it does feel so dry. It also has a tip over feature, which or safety is great. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is I wish you could operate the humidifer separate from the heater but you can't. Can't have it all I guess. Oh, and we have a modern looking apartment and this fits right in!

Germ Guardian H2000 Manual Ultrasonic Humidifier Review

The Germ Guardian H-2000 is the best ultrasonic humidifier I've seen in a decade. But that only means that it works. The humidifier is well-crafted but thoughtlessly designed. I was pleased with a couple of ultrasonics that I had years ago. When their motors eventually died and I needed replacements, I found that ultrasonic humidifiers had all but disappeared from the market by the mid-1990s. So I bought evaporative humidifiers instead. The trouble with evaporatives is that they require a wick, which molds easily and pervasively and must be replaced at least every two weeks. That's expensive. It costs me $150 per year to run each of my evaporative humidifiers. I'd rather have ultrasonics, which are less prone to mold, less expensive to operate, and quieter. When ultrasonic humidifiers reappeared on the market a few years ago, I bought some....and returned them all. They broke within weeks and left puddles on the floor.

This brings me to the Germ Guardian H-2000. If you want an ultrasonic humidifier that isn't fit for the trash, you have to pay more than $100. This H-2000 seems to be well-made. Happily, you can set it directly on the floor if you like. I have run it for days sitting on hardwood, and the floor is not even damp. There are little compartments for storing the power cord and for the air filter. A small brush is provided for cleaning the inside of the unit, though I don't know what use it would be. The humidifier barely makes a sound. The controls are straightforward. You choose cool or warm mist, then turn the humidity dial to the level of output you desire. A blue LED lights when the power is on, and a red LED indicates when the tank needs refilling. I've never had any trouble with white dust from this humidifier.

On the downside, the 1.4 gallon tank has a handle only on top, so it is difficult to balance the tank to fill it from the bottom. It's also rounded on top, so you can't set the tank down to fill it either. Remember the days when all humidifier tanks were flat on both ends and had a handle on each for ease of filling? No more. Usually ultrasonic humidifiers are easy to clean if they should mold, because all the innards are exposed. But the H-2000 has an optional warm mist, so water passes through a concealed channel as it goes from the tank to the vibrating disc, where it is presumably exposed to heating coils. You could run ammonia through the channel to kill mold, but there would be no way to remove slime. The tank is infused with silver nanoparticles to retard microbe growth, but machine's body isn't. Strange, because mold growth in humidifiers never starts in the tank. The on/off knob would benefit from some ridges. It's so smooth that I can't grip it unless my hands are perfectly dry.

The Germ Guardian H-2000 takes 30 hours to empty the 1.4 gallon tank with the humidifier set on its highest output. That's an output of 0.047 gallons of water per hour. My evaporative humidifiers put 0.083 gallons per hour into the air, nearly twice as much. For this reason, the H-2000 is best suited to a small bedroom, placed close to the bed. In the "warm" mode, the water is heated to 80 degrees F. The mist is warm in the base, the column (spout guide), and where it comes out of the spout. But by the time it gets a couple of inches from the machine, the mist is cool. So I see little point in the warm mist feature. If you want an ultrasonic humidifier, I won't try to dissuade you from this one. In spite of its deficiencies, it's the best one I've found in recent years. But it's only suitable for small rooms.

I can't claim much previous experience with dehumidifiers, but this one did the job, and did it well. I used this thirsty beast to help suck up the excess water of a truly gross basement flood, and it made a big difference in the clean-up and with the general air quality. The set-up was simple, the 30-pint container was substantial, and there were no mechanical failures of any kind, in spite of the fact that I ran the dehumidifier pretty much non-stop.

Obviously, if you've suffered a huge amount of water damage, or you're living in the middle of a swamp or something, you'll want to think about a larger model, but I strongly recommend this brand.

LG makes similar units under it's own label as well as others, including Sears and Comfort-Aire.When they work, they work great.But, overall, dehumidifiers fall into the category of"They don't make 'em like they used to."A service life of 10 - 20 yrs used to be common (I had a Sears that ran for 17 yrs).According to a service rep I spoke to, 3 yrs is now considered "good" (?!). Surf the net, and you'll find a zillion unhappy people who replaced 'ol reliable after one to two decades, and now find themselves replacing new fashion after one to two years.

One primary selling point of these units is the auto-restart feature.With the old analog controls (simple mechanical on/off switch), the unit would automatically come back on after a power outage.With many digital controls, the unit won't automatically come back on. You must manually push the start button (even if there's just a brief power glitch).I run the unit in my basement from ~June - Sept.If the unit is off for more than 4 hrs or so, the humidity rises to 80+%, so auto-restart is important for me.

I first bought the Sears version (2006, 50 pint unit).Died after 1 day.Exchanged it.Also died after 1 day.Got my money back.Bought a Comfort-Aire version (according to the sales rep, it's made of higher-grade components).Ran great for the first season.Two weeks into the second season, it died.Fortunately, there was still two weeks left in the 1-yr warranty period.There's an authorized service station close to me, so I dropped it off.Two weeks later, I got a call from an LG (not Comfort-Aire) service rep who told me they would ship me a replacement unit (free of charge).They shipped an LG branded unit.It had a 5-yr warranty, but my unit was covered only under the terms of the original Comfort-Aire 1-yr warranty, so the replacement unit essentially had no warranty coverage left.Ran well the first season and the second season.One month into the third season now, and it's died.From surfing the net, there doesn't appear to be any reliable brand.I've now resigned myself to settling for a service life of 1-2 yrs.So, I reluctantly bought the 65-pint LG unit at HD yesterday.*Buy the LG branded unit because it has a 5-yr parts and labor warranty.*The other labels have only a 1-yr warranty.If you live near an authorized repair station, you can bring it in as needed.That then works out to ~$50/yr; not too bad.If there is no station close by though, be warned that shipping may be pricey (unit weighs 54 lbs).Assuming it will hold up for at least one season, buy a second one a year later.That way you'll probably have one unit working (I hope), while the other one is being repaired (or replaced).

Other negs (relative to the good `ol units of yesteryear, but comparable to other current units):(1)Fan cannot be operated independently of the compressor.In my ancient Sears unit, I could run the fan constantly to circulate the air.If you don't, the compressor will cut on/off every 5 -10 min, which shortens the lifetime of the unit.I now run a separate fan.(2) Installing the hose adapter is tricky.Horrid engineering design.Once in, though, works OK.(3) Previous LG units displayed both the current humidity and the desired setpoint.The latest models display only the setpoint.This is no loss for me since I have a separate hygrometer.Also the reading right at the unit will always be lower than in the rest of the room.I set it at 40% to keep the basement between 60 - 70%.(4)LG units come in two temp ratings.The regular units are rated for operation only down to 65 deg F (fairly high in my opinion).If you use it in a basement, be sure to get the low-temp models (rated for operation down to 42 deg F).(5) If you use the bucket, it's clumsy to install/reinstall.There's a carry handle, but the manual cautions against lifting it solely by the handle when it's full (too flimsy, you need to carry the bucket with two hands, so the handle really is totally useless).

Noise level is about the same as a window AC. Fan has hi/lo switch.Quieter on lo.Compressor cuts on/off with a jolt.Rattles develop with age.OK in basement,can't hear it upstairs. No unit this size will be "whisper quiet", in case you're planning to put it in a living area.

Summary:(1) Check to see whether you have an authorized LG repair station close-by.Buy the LG unit for the 5-yr warranty and the auto-restart feature.Be sure to keep copies of your receipt.I talked to the tech at the repair station.Out-of-warranty repairs probably are not worth the $. Especially when they charge $50 or so just to look at it. Repair could end up costing as much as (or more than) a new unit.(2)If humidity control is important to prevent a moldy basement, have a second unit on hand.(3)When you first get it, run it non-stop for a week (set it for 35%).Most vendors will exchange it if it dies within a week (check on return shipping charges if you buy online though). HD has good prices and a very easy-going return policy. (4)If you need it only during the summer months, check it out in the spring to make sure it works properly before the start of the season.(5)Be wary of rave recent reviews.When they work, they work great.The big question is whether they still work after a year or two.I'm hoping that quality has improved.Mine is still alive after running overnight.Bucket-full cut-off switch worked OK; no water on the floor.I'll provide updates.

Note added 8/22/09.Lots of rain here this summer.Unit has been running non-stop and is still working fine.

Note added 10/3/09.Now that it's fall, I'm set to turnoff the unit for the season.We've had a lot of rain this season, and this unit's held up.So this is one good data point.I'll let everyone knows whether it works for a second season.

Note added 4/20/10.I've fired it up for a pre-season checkup.Glad to report it's been working OK for the past 4 days.

SPT SH-1509 Pedestal Ceramic Heater Review

I've been using this tower heater/fan since October and I've had a fairly good experience. It's basically the taller version of the "SPT SH-1508 Tower Ceramic Heater with Ionizer." The SH-1508 was too short for my tall bed and adding an extra foot to the height in the SH-1509 made is ideal. It heats up my mid size room pretty well.

When I first got this product it looked like it was in good condition (the box definitely wasn't though). But it seems that there's a little bit of blurred area on the front inside of the remote control signal receptor. But that area is a black background with a red light covered by the transparent plastic so I can't really tell the blurred plastic cover anymore unless I look closely.

The fan was very quiet when I first got it. I am a very light sleeper and even the smallest sounds can wake me up, and I slept through fine when the heater went off. However, about a couple weeks ago, I noticed that the fan, when especially oscillating, makes a vibrating noise. Pretty unfortunate since it makes the fan noisey now - I might have to take it apart to see if anything came loose.

Besides those two things, I really have no complaints except the shape of the heater itself. It's not symmetrical as I expect most products to be. It's really not a big deal but it might bother the odd ones like myself.

PROS:
- Tall
- Multiple settings: High, Low, Fan (although very week) and Auto (I always use this setting - heater is set to go off when the adjustable temperature is reached)
- Quiet
- Remote control - this is one of the best features
- Neat and clear blue screen
- Space-efficient

CONS:
- Wasn't in 100% prestine condition when I first got it.
- Something came loose and now makes a vibrating noise only after 2 months of use.
- Fan is weak - I can't feel any cool air unless I'm directly in front of it.

Overall, I would recommend that other people who don't want a stubby heater like the SH-1508 should get the SH-1509. It's pretty much the same fan around the same price but taller. If it weren't for the vibrating noise that suddenly happened, I'd give it five stars.

Danby Silhouette 55 Pint Dehumidifier Review

Have had a Danby Silhouette dehumidifier just over one year. The stupid fan runs all the time, & the water collector bucket gets mold in the bottom. To remove the bucket is like pulling teeth from an elephant...very tight fit.

That is, when it worked!

The fan still works, but the CONDENSER JUST POOPED OUT...only 1+ years. You have to suspect that they build in that amount of durability...just past the 1 year warrantee! This is particularly annoying since these things weigh in the 50 lb. range, AND since it's an appliance (in CT) I'll probably have to pay to dispose of it!!

I'm here today to research for another (different brand) dehumidifier to replace it! I would NEVER buy a Danby (anything) again.

I wish Emerson Quiet Kool dehumidifiers were still being made. I have one which keeps going like the Energizer bunny...so many years I can't count! I have it hooked up with an external pump so that I don't have to empty it. What a dream!

I purchased this unit on a Sunday afternoon and set it up that evening. Everything seemed to work fine. The next morning I emptied the water and from then on the controls have malfunctioned. All of the control lights are on and the unit doesn't respond to any of the controls. It runs, sometimes at high fan, sometimes on low, but who knows at what settings.

I have turned the unit on/off, unplugged it, etc., but to no avail. The instruction booklet isn't very helpful. Nothing in the "troubleshooting" section that addresses this glitch. Since I can't set the humidity rate or any other control, I'm returning it ASAP.

The first DeLonghi 30-pint unit I received from Amazon looked great but did not function properly; the cooling unit that removes water from the air didn't work.I returned the unit for an exchange.(Amazon gets five stars for their excellent return process).The second unit arrived in good condition and worked for about 2 minutes before the compressor in the cooling unit stopped, never to start again.I tested the unit in an 80 degree bathroom at 100 percent humidity and it did not remove a drop of water from the air.The literature with the unit does not provide any help on this type of malfunction, but does give a Web site address (www.delonghi.com).The Web site had great graphics but no useful information.A note to the company asking if there was any way to solve the problem elicited a recommendation to return the unit.
The DDH30 dehumidifier appears well-made in other respects, but clearly there is a quality control problem with the refrigeration unit, or it is easily damaged during shipment.It appears impossible for a homeowner to open the unit to do any minor repairs, so the only alternative is to return units that don't work.An electrical schematic is located behind the removable water bucket, but isn't very helpful because there isn't any easy way to access the unit's innards.I notice that the controls for the DDH30 are more primitive than the larger models.Perhaps those more sophisticated units are more reliable, but I'm not taking the chance...
In my experience, the DDH30 dehumidifier -- like the DeLonghi web site -- looks great but isn't very useful.

Amcor AHD45E Dehumidifier Review

Mine has a Haier label rather than Amcor, but it's clearly the same machine.Worked great for 2 weeks or so, pulled a few full buckets of water out of my basement air.All of a sudden it stopped pulling water and became a glorified and noisy fan for days on end and the humidity grew to over 70%.I'm returning it today and shopping for a new brand...

I recommend avoiding these Amcor/Haier machines.Reliability appears to be a major problem with them, and mine was very noisy - could hear it from upstairs and the unit is in the basement.

The high cost of the CD35 (compared to most home units) may be appropriate for someone who needs to move it frequently to different locations, due to its carry handle, good castors and metal case.

However, if you are concerned about efficiency, don't consider this unit.Based on an ad that erroneously listed its power consumption at 2.5 amps (the CD35P I purchased actually drew over 4 amps) I assumed that with the high price would come high efficiency, but not so.

I put the unit in a damp basement that had 82% RH and 63º F

In 72 hours of constant operation it only managed to bring the humidity down to 66% while extracting about 14.5 pints, and using about 20 kWh, which comes to about .34 liter per kWh.

A 15 year old Sears dehumidifier, in the same basement and conditions, brought the humidity down from 78% to 60% and used 7.02 kWh in 12.5 hours.That comes to .834 liter per kWh.So, the old Sears was more than twice as efficient under the same conditions.

I talked to a man at Ebac to find out if my unit was defective.He insisted that it was performing exactly as it should.

I've had this dehumidifier for 3 weeks so I can't say how well it holds up. So far the cons are:
the continous-drain hose attachment works very well (unlike the Kenmore model I tried previously), it works fine, easy set up, the filter is easy to remove and clean.
The cons: It is very noisy and even though it is in the basement I have to turn it off overnight as it is directly below our bedroom. It is very smelly (chemical smell) the first week or so.
I'm happy I found it and just went and bought the 30 pint model for some of my upstairs rooms...

WindChaser Mini Dehumidifier Review

I bought this to go in a small block room in the back of my house. It's airtight to make it fireproof and I was having a lot of problems with moisture from the concrete in the blocks that is still curing. The house was only about 4 months old. I bought the WindChaser and that thing really works. For the first week or so, I had to empty it every day. After that, the room started to dry out so I only have to empty it about every 3 or 4 days or so. About 2 months after I started running it, I noticed that it sounded a little funny so I turned it off. After about an hour, I turned it back on and the fan wouldn't run. I opened it to see what might be the problem since, it is a pretty simple design and there isn't much to go wrong. The fan is a standard 3 or 4" brushless 12v dc, very similar to what is probably circulating air into most computer cases. The lubricant on the bearings had dried out causing the motor to stop. I suppose from the moisture or heat?? Anyway, I pulled the bearing cover off (just a small piece of rubber that snaps over it), and a couple of 3 in 1 oil did the trick. I think it actually works better now! Compared to the cost of the larger one's,the space savings, and the noise of the large one's, having to oil the motor once was a small price to pay. This thing really is a great item. Not quite as quiet as they advertise, but nothing you wouldn't get use to in an hour or two. About like most small air purifiers.

Danby DDR6588EE Dehumidifier Review

I've been using this in a 1500 sq ft basement now for about a month and I honestly have to say I don't know what the previous reviewers on this product were thinking when they ordered.It's a dehumidifier.Every dehumidifier I have ever owned has been loud.That's what happens when you mount a fan and compressor unit together in a small cabinet.

You really need to consider why you need a dehumidifier and for how large an area you are buying in the first place.If you need to dehumidify only a small area in a lived in space, then this is not the dehumidifier for you.This is exactly what it says it is and it does an incredible job.Danby actually list this as "for areas up to 3,700 sq. ft. depending on conditions."I suspect that might be pushing it if you actually tried to use it for that much space, but to be fair I may be wrong on that.For our 1500 sq ft area it turned out to be an incredible find.The basement in our new place had a humidity level of around 65% when we moved in.This is just way too high to tolerate.I needed a quick solution for a basement with an obvious moisture problem (until I can devote the time and bigger money to fixing the various causes of the moisture anyway).Within the first 24 hours of clicking this Danby Dehumidifier on, I saw a drop to around 45%, so 24 hours got me a 20% drop.This is very nice.But it gets better.As time goes on this dehumidifier keeps sucking in water and I have seen numbers as low as 38% down there with an average of 40%.Note that at this point I'm keeping it set on high fan and 45% as the cut-off point (which means it shuts down when the humidity drops to 45% or lower - ideal range for indoor humidity is generally agreed upon as between 40% to 50% - below 35% is considered too dry).So with an average of 40%, even set on 45% the dehumidifier keeps the humidity down below the 45% mark according to my humidity gauge.Nor does it raise temperatures all that significantly.It does put out heat, but not any more than any other dehumidifier in my experience.The reason other reviewers complained about this seems obvious to me - they bought too much dehumidifier for a space that needed far less.

If you are worried about the noise, know that this is rated at 60 decibels.This comes in roughly at the same level as "normal conversation" on the decibel charts.So yes it could be distracting if you plan to put it in a room where you watch television or regularly do things that noise would be irritating.And as a comparison, the average hair dryer or lawn mower comes in at 90 decibels.This thing is just not that loud for use in a basement or other location that does not need silence.

I don't think the unit looks any cheaper than other products out there today.It does have a lot of plastic on it, but then again it's not like I plan on rolling it down a hill in impact test or anything.It just sits there with nothing on top of it, so I don't think in the long run this matters one bit.In fact, thank you Danby for not making the thing overly heavy and overly costly with a metal case!

The one complaint I have:emptying the tank could be smoother.If you don't have drain hose and you use the tank expect to empty it about twice a day in a high humidity environment.This is not a smooth process.The tank slides out ok, but getting it back in takes a little work of lining it up and getting it just so-so to slide back in.Ultimately it does not take that long and it does go in so I consider this a minor annoyance that I could easily solve if I just went out and got a hose.If you have a drain hose and a basement drain to drop it in then this will solve that problem easily (the drain hose makes it a complete no fuss thing and Danby includes a drain hose connector that will hook to any standard hose thread).Considering that this is a 65 pint dehumidifier, this really is the best option for drainage anyway.

The short of it is, if you need a good dehumidifier that will handle high humidity for an area of 1500 sq ft or more, look no further.If you need to dehumidify an area smaller than this, do not buy this.Bigger is not better with dehumidifiers.If you have a particularly moist area like we had then in my opinion overbuying on the rating is a good thing since it helps, but overall think about your needs and look at the ratings before buying and then complaining.

I travel frequently and, while working on a job, my old travel humidifier kicked the bucket. After much internet searching, I found this nifty little device. First off, it's MUCH smaller than you think-- slightly larger than a large box of 250-ct matches. Insert a water bottle, plug it in & you're set. Easy to clean & carry with you, the thing I love most about it is that if it runs out of water, it stops on it's own. It puts out a large amount of cold humid air for it's stature, but unfortunately it struggled against the incredibly dry air in the Minneapolis hotel room where I was staying. My recommendation would be to run the humidifier all day while you're gone with the door closed to your room and see if that humidifies the space more effectively.

I bought mine from another website.First one arrived, the box was destroyed, so I did not take a chance and refused it.Called for another one.After waiting for a strong person to carry it to my cellar, unpacked it and the castor was broken.The vendor kindly refunded some of the money because of all the hassle I had gone through with now this one.I figured, I will look for a castor at a hardware store. In the meantime I put some of the packing material under the corner of the machine that had no castor until I could acquire one. I hooked up the auto-pump hose, set it and figured, forget it.After a few days I went down the cellar and had water everywhere. The water was spitting out what is called "manual pump"This is if you want to buy a different hose, connect it and I guess manually pump it.However, that hole was supposed to have a "stopper or plug" which it did not.I called Royal Sovereign to tell them this. The guy did not know what I was talking about so asked me to send pictures via email which I promptly did.He said he would call me, he never did.After a few hours, I called him back, to my dismay the email address he gave me belonged to an employee who had quit, so after a runaround with the operator, she said someone else was using the email address.Is that legal?He still had no answer for me and said it should work without the plug.He had no plug, did not help with the castor. Told me to ship it to them.Would you trust sending a 250.00 machine to a company like this? Plus, I am from the East Coast and they are in the West, can you imagine the price to mail this heavy unit to them. It had already cost me almost 30.00 for shipping the first time.I would never ever buy anything made by Royal Sovereign, their Customer Service just does not care about your problem.

I purchased this Comfort-Aire dehumidifier about a month ago, and a couple of weeks after turning on this unit, it would shut down displaying an error message "CH" and "01".I could not reset the unit, and after several attempts to get back to operational, I contacted the manufacturer (who is apparently LG Electronics).The national service manager sent me an email and stated that he did not know what this error message meant, but to try to reseat the bucket in the unit.Well, I was not using the bucket, as I have the drain hose going directly to my sump pit, but I did the bucket check anyway with no luck.I did mention this to him and he then directed me to their 800 number for service support.Support???? Please.When I contacted the support number, they mentioned that the unit would have to be dropped off at a local?? service center, as their service reps do not make house calls.I'm okaywith that, however the first number they gave me, the owner of the service facility had never heard of Comfort-Aire, or the manufacturer Heat Controller Inc.?????He suggested I call back the 800 number and let them know.So, after calling the 800 service center back again, they gave me another number to a service location that turned out to be some guys house that moonlights as a service technician out of his garage?!?!?!?!?!?!

I'm still dealing with this issue after 4 weeks, and after several emails to the national service manager, he has not responded at all.

I am giving this unit one star, as there is not an option to select zero.Not only is the product of questionable quality in my opinion, the support structure is ridiculous.

I bought this machine out of desperation. It appeared to be well designed and contained a dehumidifier and humidifier and an air filter.
It was available at a nearby store and I paid more than I should have for it.

Well, I read bad reviews of this thing (about 60/40) but bought it anyway, and I have the topper for them all This piece of junk stopped working after FOUR HOURS OF OPERATION.

It did really well for the four hours. Now its little digital display won't light up, its bucket indicator is full, but there is no water in the bucket. I'm taking the trash back to the retailer today and buying a Kenmore at Sears instead.

AVOID THIS PRODUCT. DO NOT BUY IT.

This is a wonderful item.We have tried every kind of humidifier from tabletop ones to the HUGE multi-tank "whole house" type that have 2-4 large tanks and roll around on wheels.My main problem was that I was the only one strong enough to fill and carry the tanks, so I was on permanemt "water carrier" duty.For the huge ones on wheels I hooked up a hose to the faucet and dragged it to the humidifier to fill it.What a pain!This Kaz personal is by far the best choice.

It does have a small tank, but it's so light that my elderly mother or the kids can fill and carry the tank themselves.It's also cheap enough to put one in every room.And it's great for travel; just pop it in your luggage and use it in hotels or wherever.We have 1 in each bedroom, and in the living room, kitchen and office.They last almost 2 years then it will just stop steaming.The larger, more pricey ones last about the same amount of time but are way more expensive to replace.On low setting it will go almost 10 hours so the size really isn't an inconvenience.

Kaz used to change the style every year, but hopefully they'll stick with this one.The first Kaz Personal took a 1 Liter plastic bottle instead of a tank.A great idea, but the thinness of the bottle you use affected the steam; too thin walls and the water would run out, too thick and nothing happened. I found myself in supermarkets squeezing bottles as if I was picking a ripe melon.Now the Kaz Personal has its own small tank and it is absolutely the best!

There is a small in-line filter that appears to be molded plastic and it eventually fills up with sediment and then the unit spills over the top and doesn't pump out the way it did when new.I've written to DeLonghi to ask for a better filter system that can be thoroughly cleaned by the consumer without any tools.Some sort of mini-screw-on filter would be perfect.Otherwise, it is quite and well-made, but the filter is a poor design.

We got this dehumidifier for our 1400 square foot basement, and put it in the unfinished section which is about 650 sq ft.We leave the door open going into the finished area so that it can hopefully remove some of the moisture in there as well, although they say that it can't really work through walls or door opening.You sort of need one per room.This dehumidifier collects so much water that we can hardly keep up with emptying it out.within hours of turning it on you could feel the difference in the air, and the container was full. There is also a direct drain option if you would rather let the water drain outside instead of in the container, and then you don't have to worry about emptying it.It doesn't overflow because there is a safety feature to shut it off when the water gets to a certain level.We love our Danby!

I wish I had read all the negative reviews this company gets before wasting my money and time. The first unit worked for about 5 months, then it simply stopped gathering water. The unit looked like it was working, so I did not notice the problem right away, until I checked the the bucket which was dry as a bone. Tried all kinds of things to no avail. Contacted customer service to get a replacement, and the guy on the phone did not even let me finish describing the problem... He already knew the unit was broken and proceeded to give me instructions for getting a replacement. He totally sounded like he had given the same instructions hundreds of times. I was blown away when he told me they did not want me to send the defective unit back. All I needed to do was to cut off about 8" from the power cord and mail it, along with my receipt and a check for $14 to cover the shipping of a refurbished replacement unit. They consider the units basically disposable and not worth shipping back.

The replacement unit arrived about a month later and it worked fine... for about two months. Then it did the same exact thing as the previous one, and a few days later the fan started making a loud noise. Now I'm out of warranty and have two huge paper weights waiting to be taken to the dump. But I have learned one thing... Never again buy a Haier product!

This is one of the first home appliances I've purchased from Amazon, and while its hard to give a glowing review for something so mundane as a dehumidifier, I'm pleased with the way this one works.

Our basement is basically a finished root cellar, in a 19th Century home.We have work supplies, clothing, some exercise equipment as well as some musical instruments stored down there, so keeping the humidity level down is a critical need to preserve what we store down there.

The unit has a small footprint, takes up about the same space as a paper shredder.It's quiet, and in our cellar, which is probably no more than 700 sq ft, on the mid-level setting the unit fills up within about 48-72 hours, depending on recent weather (if it rains a lot, it fills up in less time).

The catch basin has a drainage hose in the event your basement/cellar has a central drain, or a swivel handle on the inside for easy removal and dumping.The fill level also leave enough room from the top so that water does not accidentally spill when transporting it for dumping.Overall a smart design feature.

I can't speak for the energy efficiency of the unit (though it seems to be rated well), but overall it does the job, and I am pleased with the product.I notice that the drier air in our cellar seems less musty then it did before I installed the unit.

The Danby arrived in a very well designed and sturdy packing box, and was very easy to set up--unpack it, and plug it in.

I've been using it in my basement office for about a month, and it has collected about a gallon of water every day.Musty smell (the reason for our purchase) was gone within a week.Background nose is not loud, it actually provides a little white noise to block out other sounds in the house.

We purchased this unit for a very wet basement in a old house (read:standing water during spring snow melt and heavy rains).After making major drainage improvements in the basement (perimeter drain pipe and sump pump), we wanted to further dry it out so we could store things down there without worrying about mold and mildew.This unit does a very good job at lowering the humidity.After only a short while of use, there is a noticeable difference.The unit is easy to set up and very easy to use.

There is only one MAJOR drawback.The unit does not shut off when the desired humidity level is reached.Ever.The condenser does turn off, but the fan runs indefinitely.There is a timer that the user can set to have it turn off after some specified number of hours, but how useful is that??One of the features we liked was the EnergyStar rating -- however, we just received our highest electric bill in the 10 years we've been i this house after having the unit running for the last month.Coincidence??The $100 unit we purchased several years ago, although it didn't remove moisture too well, even was able to cycle on and off based on changes in humidity.This is a major disappointment!

We purchased this brand because a previous model was a Consumer Reports "Best Buy".When we tried to purchase that model on line, the web site said it had been discontinued and that this model was equivalent.Well, I guess that teaches me to trust the manufacturer's word.I would be very surprised if this model received good reviews from Consumer Reports given this issue.

I've been looking to get a dehumidifier for a while and finally settled on this dehumidifier.I really like the bucketless feature because I never empty buckets of water now. Nice for my back. Also the design is nice and compact so it won't take up a lot of space.

I haven't had any trouble with the pump or anything like that.I always double check that the hose doesn't have anything blocking it because it will stop the dehumidifier. I would recommend calling their customer service if anyone has a problem.I called them because I thought something was wrong with the pump/hose and they just walked me through any possible reasons it wouldn't work.They were really nice and on top of everything.

We bought model DDR3008EE in 6/08, partly for its claimed ability to work down to 42 degrees F.It worked well at first, but in Fall 2008 ate a lot of power, and its anti-icing function appeared to stop working.We didn't use it over the winter.We turned it on in 7/09 and found its coils would not cool.Other than the fan blowing air, it was totally non-functional.A local shop confirmed that the coolant had leaked out.It took many calls to Danby just to finally get a human being instead of a machine.The man told me Danby couldn't help us as the 1 year warranty had run out.We paid $242 for this piece of junk.We won't ever buy a Danby product again.

I purchased two of these for use in a 1100 sq ft unfinished basement with dirt floors. I was getting a lot of moisture down there, and was attracted to this product since I wouldn't have to keep emptying both of them.

They're working pretty good, especially given the large area they are servicing. I wasn't sure what the recommended square footage was on these models, since the information doesn't appear in the product literature or on the manufacturer's website. Average humidity has dropped from 73% to around 45%. The pump function works well, although I don't have it pumping too high - only about 2 feet high into a drain.

The one complaint I have is with the amount of defrosting that is going on. The temperature is around 60 degrees down there, but these units still have to constantly defrost, which diminishes it's efficiency. I thought I'd give them a "resting period" every few hours, but the timer function only allows switching off after a certain time period and not switching back on again and cycling on a daily basis. So I was going to attach them to an external electrical timer, but once they turn off at the power source, they do not turn back on again... you have to manually turn them back on if the power source is lost. I'd give this product 5 stars if the timer function allowed you to give the unit a resting period and then turn back on, or if they turned back on once the power source is lost so I can use an external timer.

We own a country house, built around 1770.The basement has a stone foundation, hand-hewn wooden beams to support the floors above, and a dirt floor.Last fall, as part of my ongoing energy conservation projects, I installed fiberglass insulation in the basement ceiling to limit moisture transfer from the basement to the rest of the house, as well as to insulate from the cold.Summer has always left the basement damp, but this year the wet weather in the northeast has wreaked havoc.Rather than damp, this year we are dripping.The insulation is soaked, and condensation liberally drips off the insulated heating ducts.Between the disconcerting degree of condensation and providing a wonderful environment to grow mold, we needed remediation.

My home improvement center dehumidifier had ceased to be effective, and I was in the market for a new one.A friend showed me a brochure on industrial-strength units, which had me doing more research online.I saw the Santa Fe Classic, as well as others, and given the substantial cost versus the conventional dehumidifier, discussed the situation with my wife.After a particularly drenching few days of rain, and an even wetter environment in the basement, I put my research into high gear.I read positive reviews, spoke to the customer service folks at Therma-stor about my particular situation, and by the time my conversation was over, I was satisfied enough with them to call my supplier back to place an order.

The unit, made in the good old USA, was packaged extremely well on a skid and was placed outside my front door by the very accommodating shipping company.I removed the strapping and muscled it down into the basement.I purchased the optional condensate pump, which neatly attached via pre-drilled holes in the cabinet.Once the drain line was set, I plugged in the unit and let it go to work.Per Therma-stor's recommendation, I put down tarps to cover portions of the dirt floor to limit moisture, something that should have been done long ago, anyway.

There is a humidistat on the unit to set the desired humidity level.Unfortunately for me, and fortunately for the electric company, the basement conditions are such that the unit seems to be running 24/7.I left the unit running and when we returned the following weekend, the situation was nothing short of amazing.The ceiling insulation was dry, the insulation around the heating ducts were dry, even the dirt floor looked drier.In the past, we would walk into the house and get hit with a musty smell.This time, the smell was gone.Even with a few rain storms, when the first floor of the house would feel especially sticky and humid, the humidity levels were minimal.The neighbor with a house of similar vintage who originally gave me the brochure was astonished that our house was so dry given the conditions.Now he is looking into a similar solution.

Despite the considerable investment, the unit appears to do a terrific job of removing moisture.Our conditions are harsh, making it even more impressive.While I am looking to buy stock in the power company to at least share in the profits from heightened power usage, the improvement in conditions makes us feel great, conquering a problem we have suffered with for decades.We heartily recommend the Santa Fe Classic.

We bought one of these three days ago to replace a 70 pint unit I've had for about four years. That one was a ComfortAire I bought from Amazon. They had the best price and the unit was made here in Michigan. That one still runs, but the humidistat isn't even close to accurate. We call it the "747" because when it runs, it sounds like a jet taking off. I'll sell it cheap to somebody. Anyway, we bought this Soleus. Quiet. Easy to empty. Convenient. This one is in my work shop. We liked it so well we went back to the store and bought a 70 pint for the basement. The same compliments apply to the larger unit. Ignore Consumer Reports ratings; this is a good one. If you read their reviews, the unit they rate #1 had one of the three they tested not even work, and they still rated it #1? Yeah, right.

Whirlpool 8212501 Dehumidifier Pump Kit Review

After 7 seasons of removing water from my dehumidifiers by hand I was ready to try a product like this.

The idea behind this product is simple.It works on the same principle as a sump pump.When the water reaches a certain point in the pumps well area,a quick burst of pumping action causes the water to flow up a hose and out to wherever you route the end of the hose-in my case through a drilled hole outside my basement area to the outside of my house.

Installation was easy enough.I simply cut the hose to my needed length,attached it to the unit,attached the other hose connection to my dehumidifiers hose connector (for condensation that comes out of the actual dehumidifier) and plugged the unit in.Let me mention(no laughing please)that I broke my nose during this simple installation by having too tight of a hole drilled to the outside for the outtake hose.I was pulling the hose with a needle nose plier to pull through the hole and ended up smashing my nose when the plier slipped and my knuckle came smashing on to my nose.I needed a nose job anyway...

Anyway,the unit works really well and now I can leave home for days at a time and know that my basement is at a safe 45% humidity level.Without the unit turned on it would be twice that amount at least.

Just be aware that the dehumidifier pump needs to be physically lower than the dehumidifier.The gravity will force the condensation down the hose in to the dehumidifier pump.I made the mistake of leaving both level with each other and found the the water was just building up and began running out on the the floor.

Besides the pliers hitting my face (I`ll remember it every time that pump turns itself on) and having to figure out that gravity needs to be used to make things work correctly, I am so happy with the results. If it lasts a few years it will be worth the 96 $ (shipping included) I paid for the pump.

Editors note- It is now Oct of 09` and the pump continues to work perfectly. It has been on for the last two seasons (Apr-Oct of 08 and 09) and still no problems.

We bought one of these Hunter humidifiers a few years ago.I liked the big tank, low-maintenance and no consumables (no wicks or filters to buy).The only problem was, as others have mentioned, that often when it switched off, a gallon or more of water would promptly dump onto my floor.I finally called Hunter to complain about it, and I have to say I'm incredibly impressed with their customer service, and with the simple fix (new design for the tray) which appears to fix the problem completely.This is now a very competent humidifier, and we're really happy with it.You won't see a cool plume of water vapor spewing from this unit, but it does work really well, and it's very easy to keep clean (just throw parts of it in the dishwasher, and use vinegar and water to de-calcify the other parts).

For those who are shopping for a humidifier, you first have to decide what's important to you.For me, the ultrasonic ones are a no-go because they spew white powder all over my room (mineral dust from our hard water).The hot steam ones are a no-go because they get all nasty from bacteria, fungi, etc.I don't want to breathe that stuff in.And while the fan is far from silent, we actually like it at night, it's a nice gentle drone that helps lull us to sleep.

Nice job, Hunter, on fixing the original design flaw, and on supporting the product so well.

I bought this to replace a Kenmore that was not pulling moisture out of the air any more.After a very rainy summer, my 1800 sq ft finished basement had developed a bad case of mildew.The humidity level was at 90% when I first started the unit. After 2 days it had dropped to only 75%. By the end of 5 days it dropped to 55% running non stop. I had to leave for 2 weeks.When I got back the unit was off because the filter needed cleaning.It was simple to remove, clean and replace - only a 10 minute job (most of that was getting it dry).After reinserting the filter the unit automatically restarted at the levels I had set. Now that the humidity level has hit 50% (where I set it) the unit has shut off and rarely runs.

I cleaned the basement thouroughly when I first got the unit.The mildew has not come back, and the musty smell is gone.

The only thing left to see is if this unit will continue to work for a number of years.

Bottom line:Even though this unit is not quiet, I am very pleased with it's performance. I just hope it continues to work well for years.

I replaced a 4-year-old Whirlpool dehumidifier that started freezing up after running for two hours.It was still under warranty, but a factory-authorized service tech. said the unit needed to have the condenser coils thoroughly cleaned on an annual basis - cost $35 - not a warranty issue.Considering the amount of rust flakes in the condenser-coil area,I opted to replace it.

The LG is used in a finished, carpeted basement.Relative humidity runs around 70% without using a humidifier - 45-50% with one.The Whirlpool unit usually ran non-stop.This LG has a setting that allows it to run two hours on and two hours off, repeating the cycle, or for 4-hour, on-off cycles.Additionally it has a humidistat that can be set to a predesired level.The unit turns off when the level is reached & restarts when humidity exceeds the setting.The machine is a little quieter than the previous Whirlpool, but is still annoyingly loud, and while running, a pulsing sound is very noticeable.The basement gets a low to moderate amount of use, so unless we're entertaining there, the LG's noise level isn't an issue.It's turned off when we have guests.The unit is housed in an attractive, shiny black plastic case that matches a black under-counter fridge & black microwave, which is why I bought it instead of other neutral-colored brands.It has a garden-hose connector to drain to a nearby floor drain.

For me, there is a major problem with the LG.The water bucket gets emptied into a nearby toilet.After at least two dozen attempts, I have never been able to empty it without spilling water on the toilet & floor.The design of the reinforcing ribs, and location of a handle hole in the bucket requires a slow, precise pouring out of water.But even then, I have ALWAYS spilled water, requiring using an old towel to wipe down the toilet and surrounding floor.I suppose a side benefit is that area of the bathroom is much cleaner than the other bathrooms in the house.Had I known about this design defect, I would not have bought the unit.Additionally the handle on the bucket appears to be a bit flimsy - instructions in the user manual suggest supporting the bucket under the bottom to prevent the handle from breaking.It's necessary to use the handle alone, to pick the bucket up far enough to get a hand under it for support.I'd give the LG a solid 4 stars, if not for the bucket-design flaws.

We have spent this summer attempting to find a tolerable dehumidifier.Of the 5 brands we brought into our home, the Soleus CFM40 and CFM25 were the only ones reasonable to use in a space where people live.It is truly quite. It actually pulls the water out of the air. It does not leak. It does not produce astounding amounts of heat.

It's draw backs are: 1. Even though it is weighs about half that of dehumidifiers using traditional compressor technology, it is still rather hard to move due to having casters instead of wheels.2. The water catcher is more cumbersome to remove with grace than in other brands.

DeLonghi DE400P Energy-Star 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Pump Review

New, out of the box, I turned this dehumidifier on and what a noise it made.

I removed the cabinet from around the unit and found that the fan blades were striking the top of the compreser. Because the threads of two of the three bolts that hold the compresser in place were stripped and the nuts could not be tightened down on those bolts thus the compresser leaned over to get itself under the fan blades. I added washers to the bolts so that the nuts didn't have as far to go to tighten and re-applied the nuts which pulled the compresser upright and now the fan blades don't hit. The person who installed those compresser nuts had to know they had stripped the bolts but sent it out to the customer anyway.

Now, two days later and the pump doesn't pump.

I've written DeLonghi telling them that I will ship the unit at my expense to either DeLonghi or Amazon, their choice but that I wanted my money back.

I'll keep you posted.

I live in an old house outside San Francisco where there is no central air or heating. My first impression was "wow, it's bigger than I thought" (of course, this was my fault for not reading the dimensions on Amazon before ordering). However, it really isn't all that imposing. It fits neatly into our tiny bathroom, and doesn't stick out at all.

Secondly, the thing works like a champ. The economy mode is great for us, because we'd like to keep utilities low AND let our towels dry at night. The first night we had it on, it pulled out about 2-3 cups of water, and brought the relative humidity down to 50% from about 78%, on a night where it was about 50 °F. From my perspective, this was an overnight fix.

As far as the noise, I'm a very light sleeper; a drip from the bathroom faucet next to our bedroom will keep me up at night. The Bionaire is pretty quiet-- it's similar in volume to a window-unit air conditioner. So it doesn't keep me up at night, and I can watch movies in the next room without really noticing.

I gave it four out of five stars because the humidistat lags a bit (~20 min) when in economy mode -- while this really is not a big deal for me, I could imagine that a different design might work better for those who need an instant response. I can't attest to its long-term reliability because I only have the experience of a few weeks, but if you're concerned about that, then it does have a 2-year warranty. It ships with a receipt from Amazon, so be sure to hang on to that. Best of luck!

UPDATE (Jan. 2008): Two years later, it works great. A month ago, it seemed like it wasn't sensing the humidity so well. It turns out the air filter was clogged-- oops, I hadn't cleaned it since I bought it! I washed the filter in the sink and put it back on the machine still wet. Works like it did on day one. I recommend it very much still, and if I could give it 4.9 stars, I would.

I did quite a bit of research on this item and a tip I read somewhere online suggested that you find out who made the compressor before buying. My understanding is that there are at least three different compressors on this model. I purchased mine at Home Depot and took it out of the box before buying. You can see the compressor manufacturer through the grill once it's out of the box. Only buy the item if the compressor is made by QINGAN or HICHLY. I purchased a QINGAN and it is whisper quiet and I could tell the difference in our musty damp basement within 12 hours. I have the hose hooked up right to our sump pump so I am not dealing with the bucket and don't know how much water is being pulled out of the air per hour or anything like that. It was super easy to set up - even the hose hook-up. Home Depot was selling it for $200. I have had it for 3 days so time will tell but I am very pleased so far.

Update 9/15/09: The hose hook-up worked well for about a week. Then, no matter how much care we take to hook it up, the water still goes in the bucket! Instead of the hose connecting to the bottom of the bucket and draining the water as it goes in, LG tries to bypass the bucket completely and just isn't working for us. There is nothing in the trouble shooting guide to help. Everyday we have to empty the bucket and since it is running (still quietly, I might add) in an unfinished basement, we have to remember to go down and see if the bucket is full. LG - you need a better design!!! I would drop the star rating to 3 stars if I was able to change my original star rating.

First off: the first unit I received was defective but as usual Amazon's customer service was outstanding. The replacement is fine and is actively removing gallons of water from my basement. I saved the price of the pump model by routing the water drain to the water pump connected to my gas furnace and that works fine too.
The product has some shortcomings though. First, the fan is quite loud. Don't even consider using this in a living space. Second, the fan runs all the time, even when the set humidity level is reached. That may be necessary to maintain and accurate measurement of the ambiant humidity but it's wasteful and noisy. The auto-on/off timer is useless because it only allows to set the start time OR the stop time and it has to be reset every time. A more useful feature would have allowed me to set the unit to start at 8 PM every night and stop at 8 AM the next morning for example. Lastly, the drain tubing included is way too short so plan on buying some extra.

I put a canister of DampRid in one of the rooms in my house and slowly, but surely, it collected moisture and some mold & mildrew from the air. After seeing that the DampRid worked, I went out and bought 2 refills & 4 more 10.5 oz Damprid containers to put all around the house. When I refilled the canister with the refill crytals, the DampRid QUICKLY collected pink, brown, and black mildew/mold (different color molds depending on the location of the DampRid)... It worked so well and so quickly that it was frightning (mostly because I could see what I had been breathing in and it was quite gross). **I guess the different shape of the refill crystals (which are more like pebbles/pellets) increases the surface area, making it much more efficient than the flat crystals this DampRid container comes with.

I live in Florida where it is very humid and I suppose that could contribute to the DampRid working so quickly, but it works and that is all that matters (the product does what it claims to do).

*Side Note: over time, molds/mildew & icicle-type formations form on the inside of the container. The hard formations are almost impossible to remove and take up much of the space where the liquid collected from the air is supposed to go. So, when you see these formations & have little room for liquid in the canister, it is time to splurge on new DampRid containers.

I would recommend this product to people looking for a simple & cheap way to clean the air in their houses quietly & effectively. Though I recommend the refills much more than this DampRid formula, you need the container that this formula comes with to put the refills in... and this formula DOES work--so I rated this 5 stars so that the effectiveness of the product be known.

This dehumidifier happily chugged along for two or three days drawing an impressive amount of moisture from my small bedroom, until the power supply burned out for no apparent reason--it was uncovered and the room wasn't too hot. I thought, fine, Windchaser appears to offer replacement power supplies so I won't be out $60. So I emailed them about my problem, and I got nothing but a referral to the retailer who wants me to pay for return shipping, which is ridiculous. Why should I lose a dime on a defective product? Anyway, I had to ask why I couldn't just buy a replacement power supply, and they said they were out of stock on that kind for an unknown amount of time. Why offer these replacements if you're not going to make them available? It is so disappointing that I took this risk of buying a product that had only two reviews, but it was made to sound so wonderful, and now I regret it. I'm still waiting to see if the warranty on the product makes any difference. The way things have been going, I'm not holding my breath.

Update: After finally calling instead of emailing Windchaser, who would not put me through to a supervisor, I was told to mail back the defective part for a replacement. I spent the money to ship this defective part PROTECTED BY A WARRANTY over a month ago and have yet to hear from Windchaser regarding the status of my claim. This is unacceptable! I have received better customer service from no-name Asian manufacturers.

Not sure why they are called 'remnants', these are 15' hoses with fittings on each end.I received two different types of hose material, apparently these are the ends of long rolls the factory cannot use in longer lengths.

These hoses are actually fairly inexpensive.The hose material is mid-range quality, and the hose fittings (one male, one female) are decent but not higher quality.

I bought several and am using them for areas that already have a long hose but with plants near the faucet, so the long hose can stay on the outer parts and this shorter hose can water the nearby plants.However, 15' doesn't go very far, so practical use is limited.

I am using two to extend existing 100' hoses that are just a few feet short.Beats adding another 25' hose to the 100'er.

All in all, useful at a bargain price. I have more on order.UPDATE Aug 27, 2009 -
I have purchased a dozen or so of these and have been using them all summer during 100+F degree hot sun.I haven't had a single problem with any of them.The one hose that did develop a mesquite thorn leak was a high quality rubber hose.Sometimes cheaper semi-hard vinyl like these win in the end.

I've had this dehumidifier for about three months.There are several things I like about it.It seems to dehumidify very well, pulling water out of the air quickly.It is quiet for a dehumidifier, not objectionably loud even on the turbo mode.The digital controls are (mostly) nice, the unit is relatively attractive, and I like the aesthetics of routing the drain hose out the back, out of sight, instead of off the side.

I also like the way this model exhausts upwards from the top, instead of blowing out the front or back.I think this should result in better air circulation as long as it is placed in the open.Be aware of this design if your situation requires placing it under a table, for example.

Those are the pluses.Where this unit really stumbles is unattended use. It has several serious design flaws making it ill-suited for continuous unattended operation.

The first problem is the connection of the drain hose.Unlike other dehumidifiers I've used before, this unit is NOT designed to drain with a common, screw-on garden hose attached to the outside of the collection tank.It instead has a smooth nipple inside to attach a hose of the correct inside diameter.For most people, this will mean one or more trips to the hardware store to find the right size hose.(It's 1/2" ID, by the way, something I couldn't find documented anywhere in the manual or on the manufacturer's web site.)I was lucky and had some leftover 1/2" vinyl hose in the garage.

While you're at the hardware store, be sure to buy a matching hose clamp.As mentioned, the fitting is smooth.This makes it easy to slide the hose on.It also makes it very easy to accidentally disconnect the hose, something you may not notice since it connects inside.The manufacturer should have included a clamp or used a textured fitting to reduce the risk of disconnects.

Another show-stopper for remote use is due, once again, to the novel design of the drain hose.Instead of draining the collection tank like most units, the hose attaches directly to the dehumidification section, ABOVE the tank.This seems like an effective approach, and it would be were it not for condensation.In high humidity, the underside of the top dehumidification section is cool enough to cause condensation.This condensation drips directly into the collection tank, bypassing the drain hose.This means the tank fills up anyway, eventually turning off the dehumidifier.

For the first couple of weeks after my basement flooded, I had to regularly check this dehumidifier and dump the tank about once a day, even though I had a hose connected.A nuisance for me, an expensive surprise for someone who installs this in a remote location, for example a distant vacation home.

Another design flaw limiting unattended use is the digital control system.Unfortunately, the dehumidifier settings are lost when it loses power.It must be manually reset and restarted.This is a nuisance at best, but completely unsuitable for remote installations.SPT could have prevented this problem by adding a 20-cent memory circuit to preserve the settings.

One final nit re. the digital controls.This model has a two character digital display to show problem and operating status codes.Unfortunately, you have to look up those codes in the owner's manual to see what they mean.There should be a list of the codes next to the display.

In summary, my rating is all about location, location, location.For someone who plans to install this in an accessible, well-traveled location, I'd rate this dehumidifier a solid 4 stars.The rating keeps dropping, however, as it moves farther and farther off the beaten path.

One final note, contrary to the first review, the collection tank on this model is NOT 60 pints.As with all dehumidifiers, the capacity rating refers to how much water it removes in 24 hours (under specified conditions), not the size of the tank.I estimate the actual tank capacity at around 20-30 pints.

I purchased this product over 3 months ago now.It has ran great and continues to keep my basement free of dampness.The dehumidifier ran continuously for nearly a week before it cleaned out the humidity from my 40x30 unfinished basement (with little to no furniture), but now it runs only three to four times a week for about 2 hours at a time and I empty it only 1-2 times a week.The container that collects the water is difficult to remove at first, but if you read the manual (and press the sides together)the machine is a fabulous addition to your home!!It IS loud, like other reviews are confirming; however, for me- hearing it run is a reassurance that it is working! And it is not so loud that you can not mask it.Reusable filter is great, but needs cleaned often (if it runs often).Also the efficiency on this unit is SO eco-friendly... my electric bill only went up $15 for the first month of use (and it ran for over a week continuously!I emptied it daily!)GREAT PRODUCT!!!STRONGLY RECOMMEND for large basements with dampness problems!

I putchased this unit as it was specified as having three features I wanted in a basement unattended dehumidifier a) auto restart on power failure b) continous gravity drain and c) automatic defrost.When I received the unit and hooked up the continous drain hose the unit continued to fill up its bucket and auto stop when the bucket filled up.I checked several times to make sure I had hooked up the auto drain as per istructions which were very straight forward.Finally convinced I had hooked up the hose correctly I called Danby customer care in Toronto.Got through to them very quickly.The person I spoke with explained that, yes, this model was having " manufacturing problems" and many units were not auto draining, but they were working on a "fix".He offered to take my name and mail me the fix as soon as it was out.When I asked him how long the fix has been worked on and when it would be available , he responded " for several months" and " any week now".Well not willing to wait for the "fix" I asked and got my money back fromthe reseller I had bought the unit from.So before I would buy this unit ( which appeared quite solid) if the continous drain feature is important to you I would check and make sure the "fix" is in.

This device works well...That is, it works well if you are in a room that is very warm (summer heat).It doesn't work in the winter, it doesn't work fast, it doesn't do the trick in a bathroom.

To balance my review, I can honestly say that the device is small and quiet.It DOES work, so keep it in mind for an office space and use in the summer, when you need to knock the edge off of the background humidity in a room where additional moisture is not being actively generated.

I bought the Eva dehumidifier a little less than 2 years ago and it seemed to work great.I had it in an average size bedroom.It was fairly quiet and it was just the right size for my needs, as it would fill up after about 4 days.It shut off when full so no worries and was really simple & quick to empty. I was surprised at how much water it actually would accumulate - it holds a pint. I put a little hand towel under it just in case but there was never any significant leaking. On a wood nightstand, I just didn't want any moisture damage to the wood and there never was.

I would have given the product 5 stars if it had lasted a couple more years but it didn't.I know it didn't cost a lot but I think things should last a little longer than 2 yrs and now when I go looking for a new one, I have to assume I'm paying $50 for something that will work < 2 yrs and contribute to our landfills.

I started looking for a new product and I'm sad to say that the reviews for comparable are not very good.In fact, I noticed the same problem in reviews for other brands but those brands didn't even last a year!It seems to have been the same problem; one day the thing just doesn't turn back on.Mine got full so it automatically shut off.After I emptied it, it didn't turn back on.I waited a few days with it unplugged, I made sure the plug connection was good but it still doesn't turn on.Reading other brand reviews though, it seems those stopped working within days or a few months.Maybe I should be happy almost 2 yrs?

I liked the size, ease of use and fairly quiet fan, plus it didn't look that bad or bulky sitting on a nightstand.Maybe mine was a lemon and another one would last longer.I hope so because I haven't found anything better and even if I pay for a better quality, more reliable product, I haven't found one which has all the positive attributes this one had.

I should add that this unit just sat there and never had any misuse.It didn't get dropped, knocked over nor did it experience any power surges.There are many other things I own that go through abuse and I would be surprised if they lasted 2 yrs but this one I would have expected a little bit longer life from.

Again, it may have been an unlucky fluke for me but you may want to consider when buying that it may not last 2 yrs.Hope this is helpful.

Sunpentown Mini Dehumidifier with TiO2 and UV light Review

I am currently using this in an apartment sized bathroom. The bathroom has no ventilation or even AC so all the moisture just sits in there. It always smelled dank and musty in there, no matter what cleaning products I would use or deodorizers I'd setup in there. Within 24 hours of setting this little guy up(Sits on my bathroom sink countertop.) The smell was gone and it already had well over a cup of water in the tank. It also comes with a thin clear drain hose that allows it to run continuously without having to empty the tank. It has been running for about 2 months now without a single problem.

I only can see a few issues with this device.

1. To me it is loud. Very loud. While this isn't a problem for me due to where it is at, if you are looking to put this somewhere where you need or want quiet like a bedroom, I'd try to find something else. preferably fan-less if possible. (I can drown it out very easily with all the entertainment electronics I run throughout the apartment, but I could imagine it being a problem for someone trying to sleep with this thing running in the same room.

2. I don't care for the tank design. The one time I tried to empty the tank I spilled a good amount of the water into the machine just trying to pull the tank out. So I'd same make sure it's unplugged before emptying the tank. Also the hose comes off easily when I move the unit around which leads to another problem I have with the design. The hose connects to the very top of the tank, meaning the tank has to be full before it starts to drain through the hose. I can see why they did it this way but I would have preferred an option to go without a tank at all.

Of course they are just minor gripes to me. The product does its job well and I have yet to find anything else even close price-wise that can compete.

My basement runs about 80% humidity all year round and stays about a constant 62 as well.I have had this unit running for a month and it has done everything I have asked of it.The basement is 1200 square foot and this dehumidifier has lowered the humidity to 55% which is where I have it set.I have it hosed to a drain and it is fairly loud on the high setting.The only negative I would note is the bucket seems a little flimsy if you are opting not to hose it to a drain.Actually it is the handle of the bucket that is suspect.Overall very happy with this product.

I bought two mini dehumidifier at once, this one and the Eva-dry EDV-1100 Electric Petite Dehumidifier.Hands down, the Eva-dry out performs this!They are about 7' apart, but yet the Eva dry can pull out about 8oz of water every 3 days, compared to the 2 tblsp or so this device does.

However, this device is much quieter than the Eva-dry.

As for the UV light, is it really necessary?Better yet...does it really even work?I wouldnt know....

I love this dehumidifier! Both my wife and I moved to a new apartment in Pacifica, CA literally across the street from the beach. We normally leave our windows open so it vents a bit of fresh air but the problem is that humidity enters as well with the sea breeze. It got really damp in our apartment and so bad that I felt it every time I got in the blankets. I shopped around and found this dehumidifier online and thought it would be very helpful. When it came, no joke, it was like christmas. I tore it open with a twinkle in my eye and laughed with joy when I pulled it out. I read the instruction manual to make sure I didn't ruin anything and it was a simple 3-6 step process. I set it up in no time and plugged it in to the wall to see what this bad boy can do. Within 12 hours, this 25 Pint dehumidifier was full. It kept getting full for the next 4 days and now it is nice and dry in our 1 bedroom apartment. I really love it!

I gave it a five star because of its awesomeness and the vendors quickness in shipping. The product is amazing.

Be aware that this dehumidifier is no whisper technology machine. It is as loud as a portable fan but my wife loves it since she needs noise to help her fall asleep (drowns out our neighbors loud movie watching at 11 PM). Thanks Frigidaire, your the best!

Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat Review

I installed this unit in my basement about 8 months ago, and it has been working flawlessly ever since.

Things I noticed:

If the power goes out, the unit will NOT turn back on automatically (as some other units do.)

If you want to use the continuous drainage (which I highly recommend) via a hose, you have to punch out a plastic disc on the side of the unit.I would have designed a screw-type plug that was replacable, but they didn't think of that.Anyway, once you punch the quarter-size disc out it's out forever.

If you choose to use the continuous drainage feature, you will need to pick up a hose with an inner diameter of 15mm (.59" or just over half an inch.)I went to the local DIY center and found some clear tubing that has worked well.

The unit can operate down to 2-degrees C (36-degrees F), which will be great for continuous operation in the garage to keep the tools from rusting.

Has three fan settings: med, high and quiet."Quiet" really is quiet, and could probably work just fine in a bedroom.Though, it does warm the room it's in.How much it warms it depends on the humidity setting.

Four settings: The humidty level (humidstat) can be set to "continuous dehumidification" (which is the default setting), 50%, 60% and 70%.The fan will continue to run but the dehumidification processor will turn off when it reaches the selected humidity level.Cool.I mean, that's when the fan will just blow room-temp air.

A full drainage tank will stop the unit and illuminate a "tank full" indicator light.

The unit is not that heavy -- maybe for some, but not nearly as heavy as some people make it sound.It's 30.8 pounds.

According to the instructions: You will need at least 21 cm (about 8 inches) of clearance in front, behind and side to side.Air blows out of the top of the unit, so you'll need to make sure it's clear as well.

There are movable louvers on the top to direct the air straight up, 45-degrees or almost straight ahead.

Power consumption: CFM-25E is 220W//CFM-40E is 330W

I highly recommend this model dehumidifier.

***15-month UPDATE:It is still working like a champ!We haven't had one single problem with it, and I don't foresee ever really having one in the near future.I've been running this thing nonstop and it has only required me to clean the filter on the back (which takes 5 minutes.)It has remained as quiet as the day I bought it.It's awesome!

I really like this unit.It has a display to let you know the current humidity level and turns itself off when the set point is reached.It is a little noisy but not as bad as my old Whirlpool.I would recommend this to anyone with a damp basement.

I unboxed the unit and turned it on without waiting the one hour as instructed in the users manual.It was shipped on its side.I ran it for four hours before I realized my mistake but seems to be working ok.

I was a little hesitant buying this dehumidifier without any reviews on Amazon, but last year's model was highly-regarded so I figured there wasn't too much of a risk. All in all, I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Pros:
- Looks great... I know it's a dehumidifier, but it doesn't hurt that it actually isn't hideous
- Really sucks moisture out of the air
- Good energy efficiency
- Multitude of options on how to run (timer on/off, humidity level, continuous operation)
- Auto-restart after power failure

Cons:
- Not the quietest dehumidifier. I've noticed with mine that it tends to start off pretty noisy and level out after about 30 minutes
- No adjustment to the vent airflow is possible, it would be nice if you could direction it up/down/left/right, but this isn't a major issue

Overall impression:
Some reviewers of the last model had difficulty removing the bucket -- mine has posed no problems. I believe that they didn't read the instructions, which clearly say to squeeze in the sides of the bucket gently in order to remove. For those who, like me, have to deal with ridiculously high electricity costs you'll be happy to know that it's a quite efficient model for its size. This dehumidifier reads out around 530 watts on my Kill-a-Watt (measured after it's had time to settle for about 15 minutes. I've noticed it tends to spike when you turn it on, then decrease rapidly, then slowly rise up to about the measured amount).

I cannot comment on its durability, but will provide an update in the future.
